Some other rattlesnake species we found out in Arizona. 1) Tiger rattlesnake (Crotalus tigris) 2) Western diamondback (Crotalus atrox) 3) Black-tailed rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus) - Snakes, especially the venomous ones, are a maligned group, but the fear and resentment for these animals is based on fundamental misunderstandings of their nature. I was fortunate to observe 7 rattlesnakes from 4 species over the last week, and none of them acted in any way aggressive toward the large mammals looming over them snapping photos. Most of them stayed coiled, some slowly slinked away, one rattled for a split second - none of them went toward us, struck, or did anything that could be considered hostile. Venom is costly to the snake and is used as a last resort. After all, why waste precious venom on something you’re not going to eat #herpetology #crotalus #nature #reptilesofinstagram #snake #rattlesnake #viper #wildlife #conservation #science
